The Fête des Vignerons 2019!

By news services

Recognized by UNESCO on its list of intangible cultural heritage, the Fête des Vignerons brings generations together, connecting people from the villages, the countryside and the vineyards, locals and foreigners, and offers each one the opportunity to go beyond himself, to transcend and collectively participate in a show unique in the world, one which takes place only once in a generation.

All of the Swiss cantons have confirmed their participation in the 2019
event. For the first time in history
of the Fête des Vignerons, Cantonal Days were put forward to the cantons of the Swiss Confederation. Special days are also dedicated to Swiss people abroad, to the Vevey Riviera and to the Confederation.

“Next summer, Vevey will be the capital of Switzerland”, rejoices the Abbot-President of the Confrérie
des Vignerons (Brotherhood of Winegrowers), François Margot. “Every canton will send a popular, festive, cultural and wine-growing representation linked to its territory and traditions. The need for modern roots is real and the enthusiasm shown by all the cantons reflects this.” The actors are already committed: everyone who has filled in the registration form to participate as an actor in the Fête des Vignerons 2019 has been offered a role. To date, 5,418 actors have confirmed. Over half of the actors are over the age
of 40, however, the Fête affects all generations: the youngest participant will be 3 and a half when it takes place and the oldest will be over 86. All age ranges are represented and over 1,000 children will take part in the show.

Logically, the city of Vevey has the largest number of actors. However, we can see an increased rate of participation in neighbouring towns, whilst we can also see actors coming from towns that are further away, particularly from Chablais, where over 150 actors live. At the beginning, the Fête was first and foremost about Vevey, however, nowadays the whole region is involved in the event. 20% of actors registered took part in 1999. 67%
of actors registered for 2019 will be participating for the first time. A third of faithful participants were present
in the previous Fêtes of 1955, 1977 and 1999 and will celebrate their fourth event in 2019. We can also
see a change in the ratio of men and women from 1999 to 2019. It has gone from 49% men/33% women in 1999, to 34% men/51% women in 2019.

To mark this symbolic moment, Tissot, the official watchmaking partner of the event, has unveiled
a clock showing the countdown
time to the opening of the Fête des Vignerons which is 18th July 2019
at 7 am, the time of the traditional award ceremony of the winegrowers/ labourers. This clock will soon be installed at the station in Vevey.

The sale of tickets for the Fête des Vignerons 2019 is underway, by internet ( and in Starticket sales points (Coop City, Manor, La Poste). 20 spectacles are planned, that is, 10 during the day and 10 at night, in an arena with a capacity of 20,000 seats.
