By Tammy Peters

A collection of over 75 independently owned hotels around the world, the vision behind the Autograph Collection is to offer an evolving group of passionately independent hotel experiences ranging from a 15-room boutique hunting lodge in the mountains of Colorado, to a 19th century neoclassical palace in the majestic city of Prague. The Collection prides itself in being Exactly like nothing else. Each hotel is thoughtfully chosen for its quality, originality, bold character and an ability to offer unique experiences tailored to a guest's individual sense of style and adventure. Just coming up on its 5th year anniversary, Autograph Collection is still relatively new, but its distinct portfolio has proven to be a highly successful venture thanks to a discerning selection process and each hotels' ability to create enriching, one-of-a-kind travel experiences.

Guests will have the opportunity to get under Portland's cultural skin by interacting with Maine artisans, craftsmen and chefs. In keeping with the building's literary heritage, the hotel will also showcase local authors, painters, textile makers and wood-workers. Their works will decorate the public spaces and guest rooms and design accents that tap into the building's history will include a letterpress art wall sculpture and a Mainer art gallery with an antique typewriter installation. Each of the 110 guest rooms is inspired by a 1920 journalist's office with a vintage-style writing desk and playful newsroom references including authors quotes in unexpected places like closet walls and in in-room safes. Interiors and architecture are being done by Stonehill Taylor whose work includes NYC's NoMad Hotel, Refinery Hotel and Crosby Street Hotel. The restaurant, M.C. UNION, will be home to the James Beard Award-winning chefs, Mark Gaier and Clark Frasier, 26-year Maine restaurant veterans. The hotel's bar, The Inkwell, will serve vintage cocktails. To further enhance the hotel's connection to local art and literary community, partnerships are being developed with local institutions such as MECA (Maine College of Art), The Telling Room, the Portland Public Library and The Salt Institute to provide guests with exclusive insider access to unique entertainment, art programs, creative community gatherings, trade workshops and a lecture series on-site at the hotel.
